Today was my first day of medical school! We had orientation sessions all day, the last of which was our Hebrew evaluation. I know absolutely no Hebrew, so that was fun! They were SO excited that I knew what sound the letter ר makes. It's "resh" and makes the "r" sound. Easy. It's a backwards r. There's your Hebrew lesson for the day. Needless to say, I'm in the beginning of the beginners class. I hope I learn quickly.
Usually in sessions spanning most of my day, I would be bored and wishing they would end. Every single one had me interested and there was never a moment where I wished I was somewhere else.
We talked about culture, global health, finances, curriculum, scheduling, rules and an introduction to Soroka Hospital by the Vice Director. Soroka is where we will be training during our time here.
After that, a few of us went out for authentic Israeli felafels, which are deep-fried balls of garbanzo beans. They were yummy :) Kind of made me a little sick, though. I won't be having them again.
Then we went out apartment hunting as a large group. We only got to see three apartments, and none really stuck out at me. I'm just looking for a cheap place. It doesn't have to be very nice, just liveable with lots of floor space for when my friends visit me in Israel :D
While we were waiting for one of the Israeli landlords to call us (because you know, they do things on Israeli time), we stopped for some ice cream treats. I got what I thought was a fudgesicle for 3 shekels. Not the case. It really looked like a fudgesicle on the wrapper, but it was cola-flavored popsicle. It was quite a surprise at first. Man, I wish I could read Hebrew.
Well, I think that's all for now!
