Keys are strange in Israel. By strange, I mean they are strange to me. They're squarish. Skeleton keys are also widely used, but the more modern keys look like this:
That's pretty much exactly what my apartment key looks like.
Anyway, I went to a Shabbat dinner with a Jewish family. It was wonderful! It started off with some borscht made with beets. We took a dollop of plain yogurt and put it in the center along with some pepper. Super tasty.
This isn't what we actually ate, but it looks identical. I still lack a camera. I'm sorry :(
After the borscht was the main course of chicken with amazing seasonings, mushrooms, and onions. We also had red quinoa, wild rice, and something else mixed together in another dish. The third part was halved squash. Yum yum. Dessert was fruit salad with sorbet on top.
It wasn't strange food at all. All of the (delicious) flavors were familiar to me except the borscht, which I'm a huge fan of now. The couple that hosted us are very artsy, and they have a beautiful house and gardens. They both work at BGU in sociology. The wife is retiring, though. We had a wonderful time, and they invited us back for Shabbat next Friday when their grandchildren are there.
Okay, it's bedtime for me! I don't have a functioning alarm clock, so I have to get to bed in enough time to get up for church tomorrow :)
