I woke up in Israel this morning. My first thought wasn't, "Where am I?" or "Whoa, I'm in Israel!" or even "Ahh, I'm glad I really wasn't falling from that cliff."
No, it was more like, "Crap! It's 9 o' clock!"
I was supposed to meet the group at 8am outside the Soroka hospital only a couple blocks from the apartment where I'm staying. It turns out that US out-of-service cellphones don't work well as alarm clocks. After my Israeli friend Tohar helped me navigate campus and search for the group, we eventually found them at a cafe where everyone was eating breakfast.
Late on my first day. Awesome. At least all I missed was a tour of the hospital, which Tohar gave in brief as we searched for the group.
And now I know that I have to use a legit alarm clock.
Other than that little hitch, the day has been great. I only met probably 15 of my classmates yesterday, and I got to meet the rest today (which is about 20 more, I think). They are so awesome! I'm so excited to spend the next four years with these people.
We went grocery shopping as a group after breakfast to a different grocery store than the one I visited yesterday. I thought maybe the prices were high because I was in a natural foods market. No, not the case. They were comparable, and some were even cheaper at Eden. A box of Cheerios is about 25 NIS, which is over $7 USD. Crazy, right? I won't be eating any cereal for breakfast. Eggs and gluten-free oatmeal are great for me!
There is another student who is gluten-free, and we shopped together. She is fluent in Hebrew, so it was very helpful to have her helping me determine what to buy.
Right now I'm relaxing until the Shabbat dinner tonight with a Jewish host family. I'm going with my classmate Laurel, who I've gotten to know a little bit today and she's really neat! I'm really excited, but I don't know what to wear. I'm going to guess a skirt and dress shirt? We'll see how well I fit in.
I think I'm going to squeeze in a quick nap before that, so I'm going now. Thanks for all the comments! I love hearing from everyone, even if they do Google Translate all their messages into Hebrew before posting them ;)
